The Headwaters 50k course is a scenic, looping course through the Klamath Mountains of Northern California, west of Mt. Shasta. There is 5400′ of elevation gain and equal loss. Trail surfaces include single track trail, unimproved dirt road, and gravel road.

The course begins on the west side of Lake Siskiyou at the Lake Siskiyou Marina. It follows the lake trail clockwise along the shores of the lake for about 1.5 miles to the North Shore day use area. Here it joins forest road 40N27 heading west. The terrain is flat to rolling for the first 3 miles, and then climbs an easy grade to Rainbow Ridge Aid Station #1 (mile 5.0). Runners leaving Rainbow Ridge Aid Station quickly climb steep single track to the top of the north-south trending namesake spine. The course negotiates steep peaks and troughs on forested single track trail with dramatic views of Mt. Shasta to the east, Mt. Eddy to the west, and Black Butte on the valley floor below. The course continues following Rainbow Ridge north then west to the flanks of Mt. Eddy. As runners approach High Divide Aid Station #2 (mile 11.6) they rejoin the forest roads. A steep, technical descent on forest road 40N27 follows High Divide. At the bottom of this descent the course turns right to cross the Sacramento River. Once across the river the course joins the historic Sisson-Callahan trail, beginning a long, 5 mile grind along the banks of the picturesque mountain stream. About 2/3 up this climb runners will find respite at North Fork Aid Station #3 (mile 17.2). After North Fork Aid Station #3 runners climb for another 2 miles on the Sisson-Callahan trail to the course’s highest point at 6,000’ before looping back to North Fork Aid Station #4 (mile 22.2). Forested roads connect North Fork Aid Station #4 to High Divide Aid Station #5 (mile 24.5) via a quick 2.3 mile jaunt. Leaving High Divide Aid Station #5 runners embark on the notorious technical descent of forest road 40N27 as they did earlier in the day. If you found this descent to wreak havoc on your quads the first time, then take special caution on this second descent. At the bottom the second time, runners will make a left turn towards Deer Creek, then back to the Lake Siskiyou trail before finally finishing at the Lake Siskiyou Marina (mile 30.8).

There are 5 aid stations along the 50k course. The distance between aid stations ranges from 2.3 miles to 6.6 miles. Drop bags are allowed at High Divide and North Fork Aid Stations . Crews may only assist runners at North Fork Aid Stations (A3 & A4). Pacers are not allowed. Cutoff times are strictly enforced for the sake of the generous volunteers that make this event possible.
